The meticulousness of Danish design is remarkable. Surprisingly, it is rare to find the new clashing with the old. 1. Royal Danish Opera House
A landmark structure on the waterfront, the Royal Danish Opera House symbolizes Copenhagen’s cultural significance, showcased through its highly visible lobby facing the city. The design is particularly distinguished by the maple-clad shell of the auditorium and the dramatic canopy above it.
2. The Black Diamond

The Black Diamond serves as a modern addition to the Royal Danish Library. Its name is derived from its irregular shape and dark stone facade that prominently stands on the waterfront. The building accommodates various functions, including a theater, meeting rooms, and a café.
3. 3xn Architects
The renowned and internationally recognized architects have moved into newly renovated offices. The structure was once an old workshop where the Danish Government constructed its Gunboats. The materials used in the recently updated building were not ideal for indoor acoustics, prompting the designer to opt for acoustic plaster instead of traditional acoustic ceilings.
4. Danish Architecture Centre
Located on the waterfront across from the lively Christians Brygge, this structure designed by the Dutch firm OMA serves as the new hub for Danish Architecture. Comprising housing, retail, office spaces, and public areas, the building facilitates a broad range of interactions among the various structural programs.
5. 8 House
Situated in a new suburb, this mixed-use townhouse development is designed in the shape of a figure 8, incorporating retail, apartments, and townhouses that ascend the structure via an intelligent network of elevated streets and bike paths. The rooftops slope at the southwest corner, offering views of the pastures and wetlands of Kalvebod Faelled beyond.
6. Kalvebod Waves
The design of the Kalvebod Waves features two public squares that extend into the water to enhance natural sunlight and wind conditions. The first square is intended for various active water-based activities, including sailing, while the second square is designed for more passive pursuits such as sunbathing.
7. M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark

Located about a 50-minute drive from downtown Copenhagen, the Maritime Museum is set within a repurposed dry dock to preserve the views in and around Denmark’s most famous and significant structure, the Kronborg Castle. Connected through a series of logical exhibition and display spaces, the building retains the original dry dock walls and offers new outdoor areas where visitors can appreciate the grandeur of shipbuilding.
