The Good Haus exemplifies the blend of design and functionality, aiming to serve as a model of a “good house.” This residence belongs to Mela Breen and David Good, the principal designer and builder, and its name is derived from Dave’s surname.
What constitutes our vision of a good house? In this instance, it refers to a structure that explores the potential of site-specific design while ensuring it meets the highest standards of energy efficiency. Our good house reflects our principles regarding resilience, efficiency, health, comfort, aesthetics, and a sense of playfulness.
The essence of the Good Haus is shaped by its location, a steep and rocky hillside that descends into a small meadow on a neighboring foothill. Constraints on the buildable area, seasonal drainage issues, and a welcoming flat granite outcrop influenced the initial design. Two intersecting geometric forms were envisioned, each extending to connect the structure with the landscape, intersecting one another to create balance.
