Rooted Strand residence by Horst Architects

The Strand Residence is an AIA award winning home designed by Horst Architects and located in Dana Point, . It’s a tranquil place that offers an appropriate framework for meditation, relaxation and contemplation of the ocean and the sky due to the superposition of the reflecting ponds placed on the building’s central courtyard.

There’s a perfect balance between views and privacy, communal space and intimacy. The structure of the house is anchored by limestone walls, helping it to sit along the coastal terrain.

The construction appears like being part of the site because of the interaction between light, materials and composition.

How do the architects balance natural light and privacy without compromising the tranquility of the space? I’m curious about how the limestone walls influence the overall ambiance and connection to the coastal environment.

The architects use strategically placed windows and deep overhangs to invite natural light while ensuring privacy. The limestone walls add a warm, textured feel that grounds the home, enhancing its serene ambiance and creating a strong, organic connection to the coastal surroundings.
