The Prospect House in San Diego, California

The Prospect house is a gorgeous, contemporary abode that was built in La Jolla, San Diego, upon a formerly abandoned site. The unique and practical shape of the abode as well as the rest of the details were sketched out by an architect named Jonathan Segal, who worked closely with the owners of the Prospect house in order to create a cozy, luxurious yet practical residence that features its own on-site architecture studio.

Moreover, the architect made use of several unique design elements when designing this gorgeous abode, thus ensuring that all main living spaces would benefit from an ample amount of natural light. The main living area is flanked by a glass floor on one side and by a superb swimming pool on the other, a fact that blurs the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors even further. The house also features a private garden in the back, while its front boasts a magnificent sculpture signed by Malcom Leland.

I’m curious—how did Jonathan Segal balance the modern design with functionality, especially integrating the architecture studio? Also, what inspired the choice of Malcolm Leland’s sculpture for the front? It seems like a deeply thoughtful collaboration.

Jonathan Segal balanced modern design and functionality by creating flexible, open spaces that serve both living and working needs. The Malcolm Leland sculpture was chosen to complement the home’s sleek aesthetic and pay homage to mid-century California design, reflecting a thoughtful blend of art and architecture.
