Useful and Aesthetic Sand Light by alien and monkey

Manny innovative, beautiful and useful things can be created by using natural materials and a little bit of imagination. Take for example the light from sand designed by Barcelona-based studio alien and monkey, by using traditional ceramic techniques.

They’ve practically used one of earth’s most abundant natural resources – sand, in order to give birth to a new project: ephemeral lamps. They can be used for a long period of time, at the end of their lifespan being turned back into sand.

This blend of tradition and innovation fascinates me! How do they ensure the lamps’ durability while keeping them fully biodegradable? I’d love to know more about the ceramic techniques they adapted for this project.

Thank you! They use a special low-temperature firing process that strengthens the ceramic without harmful chemicals, ensuring durability. The materials are all natural and biodegradable, blending traditional craftsmanship with eco-friendly innovation perfectly.
