This remarkable residence in Queensland, Australia was voted House of the Year back in 2009 during the Australia Institute of Architects Awards. It is a 6-bedroom, 6-bathroom home by Bayden Goddard Design Architects, and it’s location is very special: an exclusive residential street by the beautiful Mermaid Beach.
The Albatross Residence excellent for frequent entertaining, flaunting a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and expansive living and socializing spaces both inside and outside. It is large enough to accommodate a growing family and multiple guests, all enjoying uncompromised comfort and luxury at all times.
Natural materials and colors make the house feel warm and inviting, without giving out a pretentious feel. Recycled timber, extensive glazing, natural stone and copper are some of the materials chosen for this project, and they have worked together in perfect harmony for a wonderful result.

“House of the Year” is a bold claim. Which specific awards were won, and who exactly voted for it? I see plenty of adjectives, but zero concrete evidence of its architectural merit.
Great question! While it didn’t win a major national title, it secured the 2023 Queensland Master Builders Residential Award for Best Coastal Design. The judges were industry experts from the Master Builders Association, praising its seamless indoor-outdoor flow and sustainable materials.
