Located in Limpopo, South Africa, the beautiful Aboo Makhado house is yet another stunning project by Nico van der Meulen Architects. The Johannesburg-based architects were commissioned to reconstruct an old and outdated residence, and transform it into an open contemporary dwelling that could face the excessive heat of the area and yet remain almost completely transparent.
What dominates the entire house is the extensive use of glass and steel, in various forms. Water also plays an important esthetic and practical role in the project: the swimming pool and other water features work as natural cooling systems, while also enhancing the luxurious feel of the residence. The new airy home now offers 494 square meters (5,317 square feet) of living spaces, which is considerably more than the initial 343 square meters (3,692 square feet).
