Beautiful and Sustainable House 0614 by Simpraxis Architects

House 0614 is a remarkable contemporary residence in Nicosia, Cyprus. It was completed in 2011 by Simpraxis Architects, who gave it a simple, rectangular exterior appearance and huge indoor spaces.

It was created for a couple with two kids, and it was divided into two main sections: a two-story box to the east, containing a guest area, kitchen, bedrooms and bath for children, service areas, and parking; and another box holding the master bedroom and bathroom (on the second floor), plus the common areas and the outdoor covered areas.

The signature feature of the residence is the way it can be opened towards the outdoor spaces by sliding glass walls and folding wood/metal doors. This smart system is an excellent method of keeping the house naturally cool during the summer, and warm during the cold season.

By maintaining the glass walls closed, and keeping the wooden-clad doors opened, the sun can find its way inside and warm up the rooms. Its rays can also reach inside via an interior courtyard which is only separated from the indoor spaces by transparent glass walls.

When summer arrives, the owners can slide open the glass doors and keep the folding wooden ones closed, thus ensuring both shadow and excellent natural ventilation. During the hot season, the tree in the interior courtyard is another source of shadow thanks to its fully grown branches and leaves. We definitely love this project and all its simple answers to nature’s challenges.
