As the name suggests, Spa House is a recreational residence with spa facilities, which is situated in the peaceful Hout Bay, Cape Town, Africa.
The architects at Metropolis Design managed to integrate the house into the beautiful landscape, building it on the mountainside. Weathered sandstone surrounds the Spa House, which is separated from the main residence by a berm.
The owners wanted a relaxing and soothing place for them and their guests, with swimming pools, spa facilities, and large poolside areas. Water and glass are the two important elements that characterize this residence. The floor planes arrangement makes one think of the waves’ movement, while the large windows of the underwater spa connect the space with the clear and still pool. The guests’ accommodation block seems to float above the water, the dining area is located below water level, the pool decks are like islands on the water connected by a bridge…everything revolves around the primordial element.
The house itself was designed as a windbreak, protecting the pool. The architects used continuous interior and exterior finishes, which minimize the difference between the inside and outside. Concerning the materials used, the first floor, which includes the relaxation rooms, pools and guest rooms, is made of concrete, while the superstructure is made of steel.
