Redcliffs House is a lavish contemporary residence in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was completed in 2010 by MAP Architects on a steep slope in the Port Hills, above Redcliffs. It is opened towards the beach and estuary, but it also stays closed and protected from cold winds.
The residence was built for an owner with a passion for arts, so it features a gallery that is easily admirable by visitors as they enter the house and head towards the living/dining/kitchen area. The entire plan of the house is based on the topography of the site and was influenced by the local climate.
It sits at the top of the slope, and continues towards a concrete block bridgehead situated at the lot’s lower end. The main garage is integrated into this bridgehead, and this space can easily become an art studio for the client. A shaded area is formed underneath the part where the building floats above the slope, thus creating the impression that the house is gently embracing and protecting nature.
One of our favorite features of this luxe residence is how the pool is perfectly aligned to the view, appearing to actually float above the city. The pool area is also carefully situated in a spot that is protected by the common easterly winds, thus making it an excellent haven of sunshine and relaxation.
