Converted Contemporary Apartment in Manhattan by StudioLab

Designed by New York City-based architecture practice StudioLab, this beautiful apartment is situated in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The original space in which this project took shape was very much different from what you can see in the photo gallery below. StudioLab was commissioned to merge together two “dark and tightly configured units” and transform them into one spacious and luminous contemporary dwelling.

The original (prewar) configuration of the space didn’t allow much light to reach inside the living spaces, so the architects decided to move the bedrooms from their initial position on the south-facing walls, to the west wall of the new residence. With the same purpose in mind (to obtain extra light), the kitchen and the living room were given large, sun-inviting windows.

The new floors are made of wide-plank grey-washed walnut, white lacquer millwork throughout the entire space permits ample storage, floor-to-ceiling Ash wood veneered  doors emphasize the height of the doorways, and an integrated Vantage Smart Home System controls the HVAC, AV, solar shades, and lighting fixtures via iPads.

Now there are three bedrooms in the apartment, with the master suite also including a generous bathroom with a custom steam shower and heated floors, and a walk-in closet. Another important room of the house is the concrete office cube with a large flat-screen TV, and sliding Starphire acid-etched glass doors that ensure privacy during movie time.
